Sony: prototype optical media and player using NFC technology

Sony has announced the development of a prototype drive capable of handling 60GB media using
Near Field Communication (NFC). The drive is on display at the ODS 2021 International Optical Media Show in Montreal, Canada.

NFC applied to optical discs and drives means very small distance between the player’s read head and the disc surface
(about 20 nm, as in HDD). According to representatives of Sony,
the company’s engineers managed to create a single-layer 12 cm disc that has a capacity
60 GB.

As you know, to increase the capacity in optical media,
denser data recording, which depends on the distance between
paths and laser point values. The last
are reduced by selecting a shorter laser wavelength, or by selecting
special lenses. Near Field optics allow reading and
write information on very small areas of the carrier.

To work with NF optics for engineers
Sony had to further reduce the distance between the head and the disc. This, in
in turn, required the use of a blue laser to read and write data and
use of a lens of the “solid immersion” type (SIL, solid
immersion lens) manufactured by microtechnology.

But if the manufacture of special lenses, the reading head is successfully completed,
then a new difficulty arises – how to use the media
and drive? Because the distance
between the read head of the drive and the surface of the disc must
be equal to 20 nm or
even less.
If the plates in the HDD are hermetically sealed and dust does not get on
disk surface, what is the case with optical media? Sony still
hopes to be able to use NFC even if
replaceable / removable drives. The first step is to make the reader more complex
heads by installing a special cleaning mechanism on it, which will
inhibit dust particles. Such cleaning may not be enough and
therefore, an additional cleaning mechanism will still be installed in the drive
air. The third step to making NFC functional
optics is an advanced Sony servo that
can provide the distance between the head and the disc in … 3 nm (!).
Positioning accuracy required
higher (up to 4 times) than
for Blu-ray devices.

As noted, the use of NFC technology should increase the recording density and
allow to achieve 150 GB recording
data to dual layer optical disc. But
the process of commercialization of this technology can begin only after a few
years. Given such high requirements and
the required accuracy, you can
more likely to expect faster technology development
multilayer recording used today (demonstrated
200 GB TDK drives).
