Panda Software: Virus & Intrusion Weekly Report (Week 18 2021)

This weekly report from PandaLabs describes the CrazyFrog worms.A and Nugache.A, Banker Trojans.CTD, LootSeek.AU and Matlab / Lagob virus.

CrazyFrog.A is a worm that spreads through the instant messaging system MSN Messenger and is designed specifically to steal access passwords to this application and the banking data of an infected user. To do this, it monitors network traffic and checks if the user has opened web pages with certain text strings related to online banking services in their address. If a user opens one of these pages, Crazyfrog.A installs a Trojan that steals user input.

Nugache.A can spread in three different ways: by exploiting known software vulnerabilities LSSAS and RPC DCOM, via the popular MSN Messenger application, and via email.

When installed on a computer, Nugache.A creates a copy of itself in the Windows system directory, in a file named MSTC.EXE. In addition, it generates several entries in the Windows registry. By doing this, it opens a series of communication ports to connect to multiple IP addresses, from which it receives remote instructions via P2P networks, which allows an attacker to perform malicious actions on the infected system.

Banker.CTD is a new banking Trojan that, like similar Trojans, is designed to steal sensitive data needed to access online banking services.

Banker.CTD waits until the user opens the web pages of certain banks, including Banking, Bradesco, NetBanking, Santander and Sudameris, in order to record user input. It then sends the data to a specific email address.

To break into a computer, Banker.CTD requires intruder intervention. Potential distributors include: floppy disks, CDs, emails with attachments, files downloaded from the Internet, FTP content, IRC channels, peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) systems, etc.d.

LootSeek.AU is a Trojan that in turn downloads another Trojan – Rizalof.BL – to the infected computer. It also uses an anonymous proxy to massively send out new malware. In addition, it terminates several processes of Windows security and update utilities.

And finally, Matlab / Lagob is a virus capable of infecting files with the M extension – corresponding to the popular Matlab math problem solving application. In this case, the virus adds its code to the beginning of the file.
