Ageia PhysX: tests with a new driver, software PPU emulation, sales

Not so long ago, we wrote about tests of the physical accelerator (PPU) Ageia PhysX, which showed that when it is activated, the performance in games (in particular, in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter) drops. Of course, it is much more difficult to measure the increased entertainment in numbers, but at 12-15 frames per second (FPS), you get much less pleasure from explosions and collisions than at 60.

AnandTech Colleagues Tested PhysX Performance With New Driver 2.four.3, which, according to the promises of Ageia, finally eliminated the problems with falling FPS.

In addition, a couple more measurements were carried out that are of some interest. So, it turned out that the noise level of the test system without PPU was 50.5 dB, with a card manufactured by BFG – 54 dB. The level of energy consumed by the system unit behaved in an original manner. When playing with the physics acceleration function enabled using PPU, the system with the physics accelerator (300 W) consumed less. If the hardware calculation of physics was not involved, the system without PhysX became more economical – 324 W (with it – 352). Colleagues explain this phenomenon by the fact that when PPU is turned on, the frame rate drops, which unloads the graphics accelerator, as a result, the overall power consumption drops.

Now the fun part – performance tests with new drivers. In City of Villains, with hardware physics enabled, the speed drop was from 26% (39.2 versus 29 frames per second – average FPS on Athlon FX-57) to 64% (22 versus 7 – minimum FPS on Opteron-144).

In GRAW, to which, for the most part, the new driver was dedicated, practically nothing has changed – the difference in tests is at the level of 1-2 frames per second when using its current and previous versions. Again, the minimum number of frames per second with PPU activation is below the acceptable level of 12 frames per second on the Opteron-144 and 18 on the Athlon FX-57.

While journalists were trying in vain to find at least some improvements made by Ageia, ordinary enthusiasts from [H] ard | Forum did not waste time and found a way to run Cell Factor on a system without PhysX. To do this, it was necessary to launch the game under a 64-bit version of Windows XP, having previously installed it in 32-bit and replacing EnablePhysX = true with false in the configuration file. At the same time, the measured performance using PhysX was approximately at the level of software physics calculation using a dual-core processor. For the sake of fairness, we note that in the latter case, the behavior of tissues and liquid was not calculated – obviously they really require a physics accelerator. Single-core processor lost 7-10 frames per second to itself in combination with PPU.

In general, the agony of Ageia is still going on, and today there is no glimpse – the product is clearly released raw, which is confirmed by PhysX sales – even large stores cannot sell more than a dozen cards a day. But, let’s hope that the trouble has begun, and soon we will still see a lot of interesting projects showing decent performance with excellent physics, and store shelves littered with PPUs at prices not from 300, but from 100 dollars, as we were promised a few months ago.
