IEEE 10GBASE-T – ratified!

In the turmoil that took place at the GlobalComm exhibition last week, a rather important event took place, which, however, did not receive adequate attention – the ratification of 10GBASE-T as the official IEEE standard. IEEE 802 Draft.3an 10GBASE-T was presented as a complete and technically complete document at the last meeting of the IEEE council. The ratified standard describes the technology of data transmission over twisted copper pair with a bandwidth of up to 10 Gbit / s at a distance of up to 100 m.

Used in the current version of the 1000BASE-T standard (1 Gb / s or Gigabit Ethernet), Class E (CAT 6) twisted pairs can be used at distances from 55 to 100, depending on qualifications. Full distance (100m) will be available in CAT 7 and CAT 6a twisted pairs. In special mode, it is possible to use the common type of CAT 5e cables – at a distance of up to 45 m.

Ratification of the standard became possible after proving that the level of noise suppression, significantly higher than 1000BASE-T, is achievable using new algorithms and architectures. Also, 10GBASE-T uses advanced analog-to-digital converters to provide up to ten times the electrical input performance. Finally, the standard describes a progressive error correction code, which was considered impossible 10 years ago. Accordingly, the decoding equipment will be quite complicated and, presumably, expensive.

As for the twisted pair categories already mentioned above, CAT 6a will be tested in the 500 MHz band, and CAT 6 at 250 MHz. A guarantee of a distance of 100 m for CAT 6a will be a lower level of interference compared to CAT 6. With CAT 7, it is still not clear with the connectors: the motherboard RF-45 (GG-45) connector will not be compatible with RJ-45. And this somewhat contradicts the leitmotif of the IEEE, which seeks to use the standard as close as possible to the already existing infrastructure.

For comparison, it should be said that the 10GBASE-SR optical standard has been on the market for a long time. It requires a new type of multimode fiber. With a relatively low cost and low power consumption, this technology requires a high level of technical training in implementation and support. 10GBASE-LRM, which is set to be ratified this September, will use older types of multimode fiber and may be easier to use.
