Reaction to Conroe benchmarks, 65nm and 45nm process technology and future DDR3 support in AMD’s words

AMDZone’s colleagues interviewed AMD Spokesperson Damon Muzny with a lot of interesting points.

When asked why AMD is consistently lagging behind Intel in terms of implementation of better technological processes, Damon said the following. Intel with Netburst architecture processors had to switch to 65 nm standards in order to increase cache memory, which would help its processors compete with AMD solutions, therefore, for the first, the introduction of 65 nm standards was forced.

AMD’s plans to improve the process technology are as follows: at the beginning of 2021, wafers made using the 65-nm process technology will already account for more than 50% of the total production of Fab 36 (recall, at Intel, this turnaround in global production took place this month), and a total transition to a new technical process will be completed next summer. In mid-2021, the company will begin to master 45nm standards.

Regarding the possible introduction of support for DDR3 memory into the Socket AM2 platform, Mujny replied that this step will be evolutionary for the company, and it will be made as soon as economic considerations dictate it, that is, DDR3 will become available in mass quantities at an affordable price.
