ATI has less chance of 80nm process technology this year

The authoritative Taiwanese site DigiTimes, citing internal sources close to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and ATI Technologies, reported that problems with the release of suitable products using the 80-nm technological process in the former will force the latter to refuse to transfer its products to new technological standards already in this year. Recall that we have already reported about this in relation to RV515 / 6 chips.

TSMC declined to comment, citing the confidentiality of this information, and ATI said it is firm in its intentions to move production to 80nm standards this year and 65nm next year.

Sources claim that ATI initially planned to make the transition to a more advanced technology starting with its chips in the mid and budget segments – RV560, RV570, RV505 and RV535, which would have been produced using a new process technology starting from the 3rd quarter of 2021. Now, obviously, at least in terms of production of RV560 and RV570, the original plans will have to be abandoned. Simpler RV505 and RV535 still have chances for new technology.

By the way, it is reported that the family of chips for the Radeon X1900 (R580) series was also originally planned to be produced according to 80nm standards, but problems with TSMC did not allow this to be done.

What does this information tell an ordinary buyer? First, we do not have to expect a significant reduction in prices for ATI products yet. It is possible only for marketing reasons, but not in any way by reducing costs due to a greater yield of good chips from one standard-size substrate. Secondly, we can hardly expect that we will see ATI’s flagship solutions with passive cooling. They get very hot even with a high-speed cooler, so lovers of ATI, silence and extreme performance at the same time will not be envied.

On the other hand, we have already witnessed how a premature transition to a new technical process caused considerable difficulties for manufacturers, so ATI’s decision to postpone its change, if such happens, is quite justified.
