ATI and NVIDIA cards with DirectX 10 will consume up to 300W?

ATI and NVIDIA have informed power supply manufacturers that their future products based on the R600 and G80 GPUs will significantly increase power consumption compared to the current generation. The new graphics cards are expected to consume between 130W and 300 (!) W. This is so far the only official information from companies regarding the upcoming video adapters, which are expected to be released at the turn of this and next years.

In response, PSU makers plan to diversify their products in two directions. First, it is expected that 1-1.2 kW units will gain significantly more widespread distribution than they are now. Secondly, it is expected that auxiliary power supplies will enter the market in large quantities, installed in 5.25 “chassis bay and used exclusively for powering video cards.

One of the first samples of such a power supply was demonstrated by OCZ Technology. Its power is 300W, and the power output when installed is located inside the case. It is assumed that the connection of such a unit to the network can be carried out in two ways: by connecting to the connector on the rear panel of the external power cable, or by connecting an additional power supply unit with the main one inside the case.

The situation with the predicted power consumption of video cards looks somewhat strange. NVIDIA’s current 90nm chips consume even less power than the previous generation. Unified shader processors in the G80, according to preliminary data, are not expected. Even if we assume that the number of pixel and vertex processors will be doubled compared to the G71, it is very difficult to imagine that the next flagship will reach the 300-W mark.

A somewhat different picture can be seen in relation to ATI – here the introduction of the 80nm technical process is still far from completion (in large quantities, it, in fact, has not begun), moreover, this year, it will probably only be used for GPUs of the lower and middle price ranges. Flagships, for example, the expected soon R580 +, it seems, will be produced according to the proven 90-nm process technology. Knowing about the very high power consumption and heat dissipation of the X1900 series, we can assume that its new revision with higher frequencies may actually require 200-300 W from the power supply.

It is difficult to look ahead when the R600 with a unified architecture appears without knowing its technical process, but it is quite possible that the final power requests for the DirectX 10 accelerator will be closer to the lower than to the upper limit of the announced 130-300 W range. Take your time to throw away your 400-watt blocks.
