Woodcrest and Opteron – Energy and Performance, Today and Tomorrow
The new Intel Xeon 5100 server processors (Woodcrest core) debuted today, the Opteron Socket F will ship in early August, while various resources are comparing the performance and power consumption of these new Intel processors with the Opteron Socket 940 on the market and making predictions for the future.
So, analysts at Thomas Weisel Partners took a Woodcrest-based system, 3.0 GHz, equipped with four FB DIMMs with a total volume of 4 GB and measured its power consumption, drawing an analogy with two systems from Monarch and Sun, using the Opteron 285, 2.6 GHz (Socket 940 processor), with the same memory size. Sungard AAA was used as an application in the tests.
Under no load conditions, the Woodcrest-based server consumed 151 W, versus 219 and 257 W for competitors. Under load, the indicator was 245 W for a system with an Intel processor and 306 and 318 W for systems with an AMD processor.
As for the performance in the test application, the picture was also in favor of the Xeon 5160 – the execution time was 442 seconds versus 571 and 584 seconds for the competitors.
At the same time, the form factor of servers based on AMD processors demanded, due to their smaller dimensions, more intensive cooling with additional fans, but this is unlikely to radically change the picture.
However, let’s not forget that the release of a new revision of AMD processors can significantly change the balance of power in the server segment. In particular, the company claims that with the release of quad-core models, it does not intend to raise the TDP level of its line, which should make its processors look much more attractive in terms of “power consumption / performance”. According to the company’s representatives, buyers will see a slight increase in energy efficiency already on August 1, with the release of the Socket F platform, although the Opteron will not reach the 65 W bar set for desktop Socket AM2 processors.
In general, according to John Freuhe, AMD Server Manager, starting in August, the power consumption gap between Opteron and Woodcrest-based systems will be 10-20% in favor of the former. As you can see, for this AMD will have to take a significant step forward compared to the situation that takes place today.
