Sapphire Radeon X1800GTO2 – a novelty for thrifty fans of fast 3D

ATI Radeon X800GTO2 series video cards were very popular among fans of fast video cards – under the heatsink they hid a full-fledged R480 graphics processor, similar to those installed on the X850XT, which had 16 pixel pipelines.

At that time, the reason for the release of such cards was quite obvious – ATI had to sell the accumulated stocks of chips obsolete after the release of the X1800 series.

History repeats itself, and now, without waiting for the official announcement from Sapphire, Radeon X1800GTO2 accelerators have added many European online stores to their price lists. Apparently, not all R520 GPUs are sold out yet, and there is little chance that they will be bought on X1800XL or X1800XТ class cards.

One of the first copies of such cards was at its disposal for testing the French site Clubic. As it turned out, in the case of the X1800GTO2, users do not have to change the BIOS of the video card – 16 pixel pipelines are already used by the manufacturer (recall that the X1800GTO has 12 of them, but on some versions one more quad of four processors was successfully enabled).

The frequencies of the card are not too high – 500 MHz for the core and 1000 MHz for the memory, which has a sampling rate of 1.2 ns. Colleagues have tested their copy for overclocking, but the results cannot be called impressive – 550/1150 MHz. Considering that the potential of such a memory is 1667 MHz, the manufacturer’s operating voltage is clearly underestimated.

Thus, the new product will hardly be able to compete with the X1900 series, but it will compete with the GeForce 7600GT. Moreover, the prices already at the start in Europe are, as a rule, 230 euros.
