Who will pay for the coexistence of HD DVD and Blu-ray?

Toshiba’s HD DVD players kicked off this week in the US retail chain and heralded the next phase of the optical format war.

Recall that the entry into the market of competitors’ products – Blu-ray players – is expected not earlier than in a few months. Since the United States is the most capacious market for high-definition (HD) video equipment and media, it makes sense to talk about a serious advantage that the first person to enter with their product gets. In order not to be unfounded, it is enough to cite a figure from the report of the analytical company ABI Research: more than 60% of the global sales of HD TV receivers this year will be in North America.

Well, what are the perspectives of the confrontation between the two formats in this light?? Will HD DVD technology take advantage of the powerful leverage at its disposal – an early start and a markedly more affordable price – and gain a foothold in the marketplace enough that Sony and its supporters are in vain?? In the short term, the answer can be unequivocal – yes. However, one cannot discount the factors that will come into play later, although not so long ago.

Blu-ray players will account for no more than a third of total HD video playback devices by the end of the year, analysts say. However, there is one big “but” – PlayStation 3.

HD DVD proponents can only hope that video replication companies will choose HD DVD when they see how successful the format has been. Ultimately, the films will be published on the medium for which buyers, as they say, vote with a ruble (in this case, of course, a dollar). As you remember, many of the manufacturers are already ready for any turn of events and announced support for two formats at the same time. At least for the period until the winner is finally determined.

It remains to find out who will pay for the support of two, in many ways – equivalent, formats? The question, as you understand, is rhetorical: buyers of discs and players will pay. I would like to assume that some of these costs will be shared with companies that have to bear the double costs of producing the same film. But, remembering that we are talking about business, it would be reasonable to abandon this naive assumption – in the end, all costs are always shifted onto the shoulders of consumers. As the saying goes, “such an alignment”.
