Cree has reached a new milestone in the development of white LEDs, which is of great importance both in the computer industry such as monitors and in the less IT-related lighting industry, Cree has reached a new milestone – it has achieved an efficiency of 131 lumens per watt, which (if believe the press release) confirmed at the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).

NIST testing used Cree EZBright LEDs with 20 mA operating current and 6027 K correlation light temperature. For comparison, the efficiency of incandescent lamps is 10-20 lumens per watt, compact fluorescent lamps – 50-60 lumens per watt.

Thus, the new Cree LEDs look very promising for use in lighting devices, on the other hand, their high color temperature allows them to be used for backlighting passive matrices of TFT displays.
