A prototype of a micro cooling system integrated directly into the chip has been created
We are used to the fact that modern chips are getting “hot”. Despite the improvement of production technologies, the complexity of the chips themselves is growing, and, accordingly, the number of transistors. So far, air and (where this is not enough) water cooling systems cope with cooling. But what will happen in 10 years?
The seemingly ridiculous idea of cooling integrated circuits (ICs) from the inside was implemented by engineers at Purdue University. They managed to “implant” a micropump into an integrated circuit that circulates
refrigerant through microchannels created inside the chip. Thus, another very promising application was found for MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems).
Professor Suresh Garimella, director of the University’s Cooling Technologies Research Center, said the MEMS pump is the most innovative development in their technology. The entire cooling system was integrated into a chip about 1 cm in size?.

The prototype contains many microchannels with a diameter of about 100 microns, filled with water. The channels are covered with hundreds of electrodes, which are energized in a wave-like manner. The created electric field charges the water molecules, which then move to the place with the floating field, creating a flow of refrigerant.
Additionally, the developers were able to speed up the flow by adding a thin layer of piezoelectric to the “ceiling” of the channels. The piezoelectric works like a diaphragm, contracting and expanding when energized, creating an additional flow of refrigerant. In the prototype, this helped to increase the pump efficiency by 13%, but the mathematical model created by the scientists indicates the theoretical possibility of an increase of 100% or more.
“Electrohydrodynamics is a fairly old science, but only with the help of MEMS it was possible to create a cooling system of this size,” Garimella said. Of course, everything is far from smooth. There are tons of issues that need to be addressed for the technology to go mainstream. In particular, mathematical models of very complex physical processes occurring in such microsystems require further refinement. Another point is the problem of channel sealing, which is one of the obstacles to mass production. The engineers were silent about how the refrigerant itself is cooled…
