The Japanese create a contactless interface for the human brain

Two research institutes – ATR (Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International) and HRI (Honda Research Institute Japan Co) – have developed a new interface called Brain Machine Interface (BMI). It is claimed to allow robots to be controlled using brain signals.

BMI technology was made possible when scientists were able to decode the signals that accompany natural brain activity and use the data. It is noted that the interaction with the machine occurs with some delay, but rather close to real time. It is important that no surgical measures are used to “connect” to the brain – in other words, the connector at the back of the head remains the prerogative of Neo.

According to the researchers, the decoding of brain signals will allow the robot to manipulate the “hands” in much the same way as it happens when a person controls his own limbs. In an existing project, the machine recognizes the user’s gestures used in the famous rock-paper-scissors game and reproduces them using a manipulator (third shot). Now the delay between thought and action is about 7 seconds – the time is spent on analyzing the hemodynamic parameters of the brain. In other words, there is room for improvement in development. The same applies to recognition accuracy – while it reaches 85%. Scientists associate certain hopes regarding an increase in the speed and accuracy of recognition with the use of additional indicators of brain activity – in particular, electric and magnetic fields.

At the same time, the potential of the project can hardly be overestimated – if successful, the control of machines can take on a much more natural character than pressing buttons, levers and pedals. It is worth noting that such work has been going on for a long time – but, as a rule, implantation and other contact methods of connecting electrodes are used in them, which limits the practical value of these systems.
