D0 stepping – not only fixing bugs, but also lowering TDP of Intel processors

According to information received from the Intel representative office in Hong Kong, not only Pentium D, but also Celeron will be transferred to D0 stepping. At the same time, along with the elimination of errors, which we wrote about, the transition to a new revision of the kernel will also reduce the TDP level. The new stepping processors will change the version of their specification from FMB 05A, which assumes a maximum heat dissipation of 95 W on FMB 06 with a TDP of 65 W.


In addition to the Pentium D models, which we talked about yesterday, the list of models with the D0 stepping includes the following Intel processors:

  • Pentium 4 631 (3.0 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
  • Pentium 4 641 (3.2 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
  • Pentium 4 651 (3.4 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
  • Pentium 4 661 (3.0 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
  • Celeron D 356 (3.33 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache, FSB 533 MHz)
  • Celeron D 360 (3.46 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache, FSB 533 MHz).

All of the above processors, as well as the upcoming Core 2 Duo line, will have the same version of the FMB 06 specification. Below are the differences in the marking of processors with different stepping, the key difference is circled in red.

Will Intel really manage to reduce heat emission so significantly for its dual-core processors (for some models – exactly by half), or will 65 W become the prerogative of only single-core 65-nm processors – time will tell. At least the source was very rarely wrong until now.
