Supercomputers, a new application – calculating the collision of two black holes

A very curious application of supercomputers was found by employees from NASA at
Research Center Ames Research Center in California. One of the most powerful computers, Columbia, was used for astrophysical calculations, which, earlier, as the staff of this institution assure, could not be carried out
due to the fact that either the calculation formulas were difficult to algorithmize, or the power of the supercomputer was not enough.

Columbia is the fourth for today
supercomputer in the world in terms of power and consists of 10,240 Intel Itanium 2 processors. As noted,
the calculation of the experiment took about 80 hours, and on one such processor the calculation would take about 18 years.

As a result of the experiments, scientists managed to simulate what has long worried the best minds of astrophysicists – the model of the collision of two black holes. Everyone who wants to see the result –

What was the purpose of these experiments? The black hole is the result of the explosion of a star, the energy of which allowed it to obtain a monstrous density and mass. The gravity of such an object is extremely high. So much so that it attracts any object and even light. Moreover, it is capable of causing disturbances in time and space. The collision of two such objects causes the release of such a large amount of energy that it is difficult to compare it with anything, while gravitational waves are emitted, propagating at the speed of light.

And it was behind them that scientists from NASA, various observatories in the USA, Germany and
“hunt”. The gravitational wave should help scientists to re-look at the very process of the formation of the Cosmos and the Universe, as noted by Peter Saulson, of Syracuse University.

The forces of gravity were described by Einstein, and he also predicted the phenomena of black holes and the propagation of gravity. Now scientists have had the opportunity to prove or disprove it
relativistic theory, for this, supersensitive equipment has been assembled and installed in order to catch those gravitational waves that come from space.

And now, after so many years since the theory appeared, scientists were able to compose an algorithm
to form a model based on Einstein’s formulas and get the first results.
Scientists are interested not only in the very existence of gravitational
waves (pictured above is the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave observatory
Observatory, which searches for gravitational waves), but also their “imprint”, an image that is unique in each case of a collision of two black holes and will allow scientists to rely on it in their theoretical calculations to explain a particular event.
