RFID Hacked Again – DoS Attack with a Cheap Radio Transmitter

Researchers at Australia’s Edith Cowan University claim that the first generation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips are susceptible to DoS attacks using inexpensive radio transmitters available in store.

First generation RFID chips, widely used by many organizations, including the US military, use the 902-938 MHz channelized band. If it is impossible to use one channel, the device working with the RFID tag (scanner) switches to another. The tag itself, due to its passive role in this process, cannot change the range. Ken Wild, who works at the School of Computer and Information Science of this university, said that from a distance of 1 m, you can use a simple broadband radio transmitter to “drown” the entire operating frequency range with your signal. The source cites a DoS attack as an analogy, although this comparison is very abstract. At the same time, it is not only possible to make it impossible to communicate between the “legal” RFID scanner and the tag, but also to put the RFID chip into an emergency state (communication fault state) – the latter receives “garbage” instead of the expected data, tries to decode it and “hangs”. It is reported that the researchers used a device priced at $ 140 for the operation, but there are much cheaper options on the market (or you can still flip through the filing of the magazine “Radio Amateur”…).

“RFID hackers” develop the topic by the possibility of subsequent RFID hacking, writing new information to the chip, and so on. But we were already frightened by RFID viruses, so it is worth treating this new “horror story” with healthy skepticism – some RFID tags generally assume only reading, and those that are designed for writing are protected by special means.

Meanwhile, RFID is more and more included in different areas of life. For example, in one of the German clinics (Saarbracken Clinic), Siemens has implemented an RFID identification system for donated blood, which has reduced the risk of making a mistake with the blood group. Many hospitals are planning to use RFID bracelets that store important patient information (drug allergies, for example). And recently we wrote about the “hospital of the future”, where RFID is used at every step.

You already know about the possibility of personal identification using this technology, but, in addition to passports, there are already examples of introducing tags into car license plates. Hills Numberplates, a UK-based company that manufactures “license plates” for cars in the UK, has selected an RFID solution (scanners and tags) from Identec Solutions for its e-Plates project. Battery powered active RFID tags are used here. This allows the scanner to confidently read data about a vehicle passing by at high speed from a distance of up to 90 m. The American authorities are already looking at the project.

We still think that RFID will soon be overgrown with “needles”, there are simply no other options. Of course, unless there is a technology that, with a greater level of security, can compete with RFID in price. But until you see her on the horizon…
