M-Audio Announces Sputnik High-End Tube Condenser Microphone. This event is a breakthrough, comparable for M-Audio in value to the launch of the first satellite into Earth orbit, this is what the name of the product symbolizes – “Sputnik”.

First shown at Winter NAMM (see. our special report from Los Angeles NAMM Exhibition 2021), Sputnik is finally officially announced and is currently on sale. Building on the classic design, this mic is designed to deliver the rich, rich sound associated with much more expensive classic microphones.

The M-Audio development team worked closely with the best recording studios in Los Angeles to design the Sputnik microphone capsule. The circuit uses a 6205M vacuum tube, a miniature double triode pentode that acts as an ideal current source to match a wide range of load impedances. The lamp operates with a high voltage signal, which gives a large dynamic range, but with less thermal dissipation than similar designs. This makes it possible to place the microphone in any way, without fear of overheating.
M-Audio uses a special design with shorter conductors to connect the lamp to reduce parasitic capacitance and more stable impedance, which is typical for German microphones such as the Telefunken 251. Sputnik also features a plugless design that eliminates related issues such as contact corrosion over time or contact resistance instability. The manufacturer declares that military grade quality control lamps are selected for this microphone model to ensure the highest quality and reliability. Then the lamps are run in for a week in operating mode in order to eliminate the likelihood of a microphone failure during the first hours of operation due to a factory defect.
Tube amplifier operates in Class A. The circuit is made in a special design based on research from Harvard and the American Physics Institute. In addition to the wide bandwidth, the output impedance is Megaohms, so the circuit acts as an ideal current source and easily matches any subsequent amplifier stage.
The amplifier also uses a field-effect transistor for depletion bias to avoid audio artifacts such as noise and clicks that are inherent in tube-only circuits. Essentially, the circuit provides a soft harmonic spectrum and fast impulse response with fast rise / fall times to eliminate transient distortion problems. The amplifier is completely linear and resistant to overload, and also provides an extended dynamic range, since it operates with high voltage and is not limited by noise and interference from below. This quality, according to M-Audio engineers, cannot be achieved with a conventional transistor amplifier or a conventional Class A tube amplifier.
Unlike microphones with a metallized plastic stationary electrode, the stationary backplate in Sputnik microphones is made of an all-metal copper alloy, which provides greater maximum rigidity, more accurate manufacturing tolerances and more accurate sound transmission. In addition, the Sputnik features a special dual-backplate design similar to that used in the legendary AKG C12, loved by everyone for its recognizable open, airy sound. In addition, M-Audio has improved the backplate design to improve on-axis and off-axis frequency and impulse response and radiation pattern symmetry.
The microphone’s ability to transfer details is provided by an ultra-thin uniform diaphragm. Long-life 3 micron mylar diaphragm from other manufacturers could only be used in microphones of much higher cost. M-Audio also uses 24K gold electro-vacuum spraying for a more uniform coating than conventional aerosol spraying. It also allows for greater accuracy and interchangeability between different instances of Sputnik microphones.
Achieving the described advantages of the diaphragm and fixed back plate in Sputnik microphones became possible only with the use of a high-precision computer-controlled manufacturing process in production with the latest equipment.
The Sputnik power supply has a special circuit design that provides smooth voltage supply when turned on to increase lamp life. Additionally, an automatic transmission line impedance compensation circuit is available for use with interconnect cables up to 200 feet (60 meters).
The Sputnik microphone body is designed with a space-age lollipop design to minimize body diffraction and provide good off-axis frequency response. Body – all-metal, nickel-plated.
The Sputnik microphone has a guaranteed low spread in frequency response, which means problem-free use of any two microphones taken for stereo recording. The frequency range is 20 Hz – 20 kHz ± 1.5 dB. Sensitivity: 30 mV / Pa (-30.5 dBV). Maximum SPL (at 0.5% THD) 132 dB. There is a cutoff filter for excess low frequency, and a choice of radiation patterns (cardioid, figure eight, omnidirectional).
