Option GlobeTrotter GT MAX “7.2 Ready ”: new technologies and speeds

Option, known for its GlobeTrotter family of wireless adapters, has so far operated under the “3.6 Ready ”, which meant supporting HSDPA bandwidth up to 3.6 Mbps while most compatible mobile phone models on the market typically only support 1.8 Mbps. However, since now the number of mobile phones supporting 3.6 Mbit / s has already grown significantly, and not far off – the introduction of the speed of 7.2 Mbit / s (which is exactly half of the theoretical bandwidth of HSDPA technology); Option announced the start of a new program “7.2 Ready ”for GlobeTrotter GT MAX adapters. This means that GlobeTrotter GT MAX cards, which are mostly installed in PCMCIA / CardBus / ExpressCard slots and intended for laptops, will support 7.2 Mbps bandwidth – as soon as it becomes available. To be more precise, the GT MAX “7.2 Ready ”will be configured to operate at speeds up to 3.6 Mbit / s, and the 7.2 Mbit / s mode can be enabled by flashing the flash-ROM of the board, and the initialization of this mode will entirely depend on the operator providing cellular services. Of course, full backward compatibility with HSDPA stations is declared, providing up to 1.8 and 3.6 Mbps.

GlobeTrotter GT MAX also provides reception and transmission of data at speeds up to 384 Kbps in third-generation UMTS networks (and, by the way, so far this is also the maximum speed for data transmission in HSDPA, i.e. to. the current version of the technology, in contrast to the expected in the future HSDPA / HSUPA, allows only receiving data at high speed, but not transmitting them), is capable of operating in quad-band GSM with support for EDGE and GPRS.

The company’s press release emphasizes that the new GT MAX “7.2 Ready ”will be the first adapters in which Zero-Install technology is used, which makes it possible to do without any drivers (presumably, in the OS of the Windows XP family). Not without hardware changes: GlobeTrotter GT MAX “7.2 Ready ”are based on ART (Advanced Radio Technology) technology, which uses signal reception from different sources (Receive Diversity) and its additional processing (Receive Equalization). It is claimed that the connection speed of a high-speed wireless modem using ART exceeds that for an adapter without this technology by up to 50% in the same electromagnetic environment (roughly speaking, at the same signal-to-noise ratio).

GlobeTrotter GT MAX Key Features:

  • UMTS interface:
    • WCDMA 850/1900/2100 MHz
    • 3GPP FDD up to 1.8 Mbps / 3.6 Mbps
