ZigBee is gaining ground

Several interesting events happened the other day, which, for a number of reasons, did not attract noticeable attention of the industry press. Partly, this was due to their “technical” nature, partly – the remoteness of the scene – an exhibition in the USA dedicated to embedded systems. Meanwhile, they clearly indicate an upstream trend that seems to have already been picked up by new networking technology. However, first things first ..

First, ZMD introduced the ZMD44102 RF transceiver for use in ZigBee equipment.

It is worth noting that ZMD has been specializing in high-precision sensors and semiconductor devices for wireless networks for several days, and the ZMD44102 is a representative of the second generation of the corresponding element base. The transceiver is available as an accessory or as part of the Starter Kit, a complete kit for developers planning to use the transceiver in their designs (second photo).

The manufacturer notes that the ZMD44102 fully complies with the IEEE 802 specifications.fifteen.4 and is currently the only commercially available ZigBee transceiver operating in the “up to 1 GHz” range. The advantage of using the specified range is that it can be used without licensing (in North America, we are talking about the 902-928 MHz band, in Europe the range is shifted to the lower frequency range – 868-870 MHz). The indicator of the communication range of the novelty looks great – it is claimed that it exceeds 250 m with an output power of 1 mW. As for the data exchange rate, it reaches 40 Kbps. The project uses ZMD44102 as a radio frequency module, the rest of the functions are assigned to the Renesas M16C microcontroller. This microcontroller is characterized by increased electromagnetic compatibility (roughly speaking, it is immune to interference and does not create it itself), which is an important quality for the element base intended for use in radio frequency wireless networks.

Thirdly, Airbee Wireless and ZMD have designed another similar novelty designed to work in ZigBee networks in the “up to 1 GHz” range. In this case, the role of the central controller is played by the TI MSP430 microcircuit, and the functions of the radio frequency interface have taken over … that’s right, ZMD44102 – recall that the only ZigBee transceiver so far designed to operate in the specified range. The Airbee Wireless and ZMD product is a turnkey platform for integrators and OEMs interested in a turnkey ZigBee solution.

Finally, fourthly. Ubiwave and ZMD have created a “workstation” designed for use in the ZigBee wireless network. Designed for security systems and healthcare. Taking advantage of the advantages of ZigBee, first of all, mobility and low power consumption, it will solve problems that cannot be solved using traditional technologies.
