Intel Pentium D 805 – potential 4 GHz for $ 130!

Our site usually does not write about overclocking processors, yet this is a field of activity for overclocking fans. But this case is far from standard. As an example, we can cite the “Celeron 300A phenomenon”, which in very rare cases did not work at 450 MHz (that is, 150% of the nominal), outperforming even the Pentium II 400 in performance.

Tom’s Hardware site enthusiasts analyzed the capabilities of the Intel Pentium D 805 processor. It would seem that nothing special: this is the good old Smithfield kernel. By the way, few people know that Pentium D 805 is a dual-core processor. This can be explained by its “strange” price – only $ 130. While the nominal frequency of the D 805 is 2.66 GHz, its predecessors are slightly faster – 2.8 GHz (D 820), 3.2 GHz (D 840). Each of the 800 CPU cores has 1MB L2 cache and is manufactured using 90nm technology. As we know, the 900s (Presler) are equipped with twice the cache size and are manufactured using a 65nm process. Intel, in accordance with its roadmap, transfers production to 65nm lines. And suddenly, a new model appears, using the old technology and with the old core ..

FSB frequency for Pentium D 805 is only 133 MHz (533 MHz QDR), locked multiplier – x20. It is easy to calculate that when you raise the FSB speed to 200 MHz, you can get an impressive 4 GHz clock speed. Enthusiasts managed to achieve stable system operation at FSB = 205 MHz (4.1 GHz)! At 215 MHz, the system booted, but was unstable.

Note that we are talking about overclocking using additional cooling at frequencies close to 4 GHz (at 100% load, heat dissipation here tends to 200 W), so we do not advise you to repeat the experiment. But the fact that the clock headroom of the D 805 is simply phenomenal is obvious. The only “but” – we are talking about the core stepping B0, separately experimenters pay attention to the Spec (specification number) of “compliant” processors – SL8ZH.

The results of various tests are striking – the “805” outperformed both Athlon 64 FX-60 and Pentium Extreme Edition 965, the price of which is more than $ 1000!

We do not urge you to rush to the store for Pentium D 805, the situation itself is more interesting – why Intel released a processor on the market that could be marked much higher? There are three versions here. First, the company urgently wants to get rid of 90nm products, and in order to accelerate sales, it has positioned them for the low-budget market. Accordingly, in order not to introduce confusion, the frequencies were reduced along with the price. The second, less probable theory – Intel decided to compete in the “overclocker market” with AMD (the same Opteron 144, for example). And finally, the third version is just a random “lucky” OEM batch of processors.

Once again, we want to warn you that overclocking the processor is an unsafe thing! Professional overclockers can check out the details on the Tom’s Hardware website.
