802.11n: and yet they are compatible!
A little over a month ago, we reported that not all solutions for wireless networks built on the draft version of the 802.11n are compatible with each other, but it seems that manufacturers are already ready to solve this problem: Broadcom and Atheros have reported reaching 100 Mbps throughput in devices built on their chips. Demonstration of the high throughput and interoperability of the two vendors is expected to be on display at Computex, starting in Taipei next week.
However, the fact that Broadcom and Atheros solutions are compatible with each other is not particularly surprising: long before the adoption of the draft version of the IEEE 802.11n, there was a debate between the manufacturers, and the two companies mentioned above were on one side, while, say, Airgo Networks on the other. Therefore, it would be much more interesting if 802.11n products from Broadcom and Atheros could “understand” Airgo solutions. Hopefully the 802.11n solutions in IEEE will dot the i.
Still, the compatibility of products of even just two vendors with each other is still a step forward, so Broadcom and Atheros hope that their Intensi-fi and Xspan chipsets will find application in the products of such vendors as D-Link, Netgear, Belkin and Linksys; and will be widely distributed. Atheros has already announced contracts with D-Link and Belkin.
