UMC starts shipping SONOS memory

As it became known, UMC began supplying SONOS memory, produced according to the improved technology, to the Taiwanese manufacturer Solid State System. Advances in technology are said to have increased programming speed not only over conventional SONOS memory, but also over NAND memory.

According to UMC, the company’s specialists managed to master the release, as they say, on the first try. A trial batch of 256 MB chips with write-once and write-back capability (OTP / MTP) has been released. The new memory is said to be on par with competing designs in terms of unit cost of production, power consumption, reliability, equivalent write and read performance.

Recall that the SONOS technology attracts the attention of manufacturers, since it helps to significantly reduce the size of the memory cell and lower the supply voltage of microcircuits. From a manufacturing point of view, it also has advantages, since the technological process is simpler than, say, the one involved in the production of conventional NAND flash memory. These important benefits are expected to enable SONOS to find its way into applications where high storage density is critical. Rapid implementation of the new product provides easy integration of memory cells with common logic circuits.
