Now, when the release of NVIDIA G80 and ATI R600 is still very far, the “hottest” accelerator is, perhaps, not a graphics, but a physical one – Ageia PhysX, which can already be bought by owners of thick wallets who are also fans of computer games.
There was a lot of information about PhysX, however, the lack of real game projects with its support made it difficult to draw any specific conclusions about its real usefulness for the gaming system.
Now, some sites, having in their hands PhysX and Cell Factor games (demo) and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GRAW) with its support, have written the first more or less detailed reviews of the new technology.
We will not dwell on the points that we have already covered in our early publications (1, 2, 3).
So, colleagues from the Hexus website.net got an accelerator made by BFG. Its measured dimensions are 167 x 99 mm, which practically corresponds, for example, to the Audigy 2 ZS sound card.
The noise emitted by a 40mm PPU fan is around 32-36 dBA, which is quite a lot. At the same time, the accelerator radiator gets very hot.
The board is equipped with four 32-MB GDDR 3 memory chips manufactured by Samsung, the organization of the memory access bus is 128-bit, the bandwidth is 16 Gb / s.
GRAW does not require PhysX to run, but its presence adds significantly more interactivity to the game. However, despite the additional effects that appear, there is also an unconditional negative – the performance with the support of the physical accelerator is very much reduced. To be more correct, the minimum number of frames per second decreases with approximately the same average, namely, the minimum indicator is decisive for a comfortable game. The explanation for this fact, probably, lies in the fact that due to the fact that GRAW also supports the calculation of physics with the help of the central processor, some of the load on the CPU falls even with PhysX in the system. In the latter case, physics algorithms are used much more complex, and the processor simply cannot cope with their processing.
The second game, in which reviewers saw the Ageia product, was a demo version of the yet to be released Cell Factor game, which is unique in that it simply will not start without PhysX. In it, physics is not limited to explosions and collisions – for the first time in the gaming industry, reliable behavior of the fabric is implemented – you can see in the screenshot how it tears under the influence of external factors.
No performance tests were carried out in Cell Factor – there is simply nothing to compare system performance with PhysX.
The subjective opinions of observers say that physics with PPU is still far from realism, albeit more spectacular. Undoubtedly, Ageia technology is still in its infancy, however, video accelerators did not immediately conquer the market. Let’s wait for more PhysX-enabled applications. Also interesting is the reaction to the PPU tests of the creators of Havok and its supporting NVIDIA and ATI, for sure it will be published in the near future.
By the way, despite the fact that the first cards produced by BFG have already flashed in retail, there has not yet been an official start of sales – sources say that the company has planned for this event on May 9.
