Researchers have expanded their understanding of silicon semiconductors
The rapid progress of semiconductor manufacturing, the results of which are impressive indicators of microminiaturization and performance of modern semiconductor devices, oddly enough, coexists with the fact that the industry of knowledge about how semiconductor materials behave at the microscopic level is very, very young. Scientists are looking for answers to fundamental questions regarding the processes occurring in chips operating at staggering frequencies – recall that the keys in today’s processors have time to change their state more than a billion times within one second (!)
As part of semiconductor research, American scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (University of Wisconsin-Madison) received new information about the surface structure of silicon. In particular, they studied the 7×7 band structure of the Si (111) material (pictured) – the most stable surface structure of silicon.
As semiconductor devices decrease, the surface-to-thickness ratio increases. 2D surface structures are difficult to study, and the tools for this work have only recently appeared in the hands of scientists. Meanwhile, the knowledge gained is very important in the applied aspect, since further progress towards a decrease in semiconductor devices and an increase in the speed of their operation is impossible without a clear understanding of the processes occurring in the material at the microscopic level.
As a result of the work, scientists discovered the action of the so-called mechanism of “electron-phonon interaction” (electron-phonon interaction). By the way, the image at the top of the picture shows a typical manifestation of this interaction. One of the researchers explained the essence of the achievement as follows: “The electron-phonon interaction itself is of great scientific and practical interest, since it is the key mechanism of superconductivity under normal conditions.”. In his opinion, the knowledge gained can lead to the creation of “design superconductors” – purposefully created structures on the surface of a semiconductor with the property of superconductivity.
