Intel: who is to blame and what to do?
Critical perception of reality, inherent, for example, in scientific circles, usually (but not always) is the key to an objective assessment of the situation, allowing in most cases to adequately respond to it. With critical perception, analysts from Merrill Lynch seem to be in order, but Intel, says Joe Osha, has problems that could lead to financial losses in the future. Moreover, Osh elaborates on the threat to Intel’s well-being in the person of Paul Otellini, who took over as CEO last year.
I must say, Merrill Lynch views Intel’s short-term prospects positively. However, in the longer term, Osh believes, Otellini has not taken seriously the technological threat from AMD and is not actively expanding his company’s presence in new markets. Delays in new product launches, lack of innovative ideas and too lighthearted attitude to the technological success of a competitor play into the hands of AMD, but not Intel.
In his article, Osh asks the question, “Will Intel ever achieve the same overwhelming market dominance as a year or two ago??”And he himself answers -” most likely not “. According to the analyst, the company was unable to enter the market with any truly revolutionary ideas, despite a series of acquisitions and a significant amount of investment in research and development (R&D). And despite the onset of AMD, Intel has not “shaken itself out of hibernation” and, according to the expectations of observers from Wall Street, the last quarter will be the worst in the recent history of a microprocessor manufacturer. Merryl Lynch analyst believes the company will need a deep system overhaul similar to that seen at IBM for the foreseeable future. But Osh is not sure that Otellini is exactly the person who is able to carry out this restructuring.
However, to blame all the failures on one person, even if invested with the burden of responsibility for the company, is probably still wrong. A string of delayed releases starting in 2021 marked the departure of Craig Barrett and the arrival of Otellini, but what have the company’s engineers been doing all this time?? And why it took Intel so long to abandon the gigahertz race and come to the concepts of multi-core and performance per watt? Not to mention the fact that 64-bit, which was not taken seriously and was not supported at the operating system level for a long time, is now becoming an increasingly strong competitive advantage.
It is likely, and here, perhaps, we can agree with our colleagues from The Register, Intel has simply become too big a company to quickly respond to the changing market fashion. And, of course, it is difficult to expect that anyone other than Otellini could do better at managing the company – Intel has realized its technological and market advantages to the maximum. However, times have changed, and AMD managed to change faster, predicting the direction of movement. At the same time, being a large company, Intel itself was able to dictate fashion to the market – for example, in the form of the Viiv platform, which grew out of the concept of the “digital home”, or in the form of platforms for portable PCs. Here the company has an advantage over AMD and, most likely, things will be the same for some time. However, when AMD’s positions become strong enough, won’t it dictate the terms to the market itself??
Now Intel still has a chance to “play for time” – while engineers are working on dual- and quad-core processors that should surpass AMD solutions in performance, the company is actively introducing itself into the markets of developing countries – India, China, Mexico. AMD has not yet come there with software OLPC (One Laptop Per Child). Will the management of Intel in general and Otellini in particular have enough imagination to continue to find ways to develop their business – as always, time will tell. At the end of the game, Osh, apparently, wholeheartedly wants Intel to return to the old days of “domination” in the market (~ 80% share) or, in any case, not to lose control over the market of the x86-compatible processors it has created. , and therefore expresses his criticism.
