Intel: who is to blame and what to do?

Critical perception of reality, inherent, for example, in scientific circles, usually (but not always) is the key to an objective assessment of the situation, allowing in most cases to adequately respond to it. It is likely, and here, perhaps, we can agree with our colleagues from The Register, Intel has simply become too big a company to quickly respond to the changing market fashion. And, of course, it is difficult to expect that anyone other than Otellini could do better at managing the company – Intel has realized its technological and market advantages to the maximum. However, times have changed, and AMD managed to change faster, predicting the direction of movement. At the same time, being a large company, Intel itself was able to dictate fashion to the market – for example, in the form of the Viiv platform, which grew out of the concept of the “digital home”, or in the form of platforms for portable PCs. Here the company has an advantage over AMD and, most likely, things will be the same for some time. However, when AMD’s positions become strong enough, won’t it dictate the terms to the market itself??

Now Intel still has a chance to “play for time” – while engineers are working on dual- and quad-core processors that should surpass AMD solutions in performance, the company is actively introducing itself into the markets of developing countries – India, China, Mexico. AMD has not yet come there with software OLPC (One Laptop Per Child). Will the management of Intel in general and Otellini in particular have enough imagination to continue to find ways to develop their business – as always, time will tell. At the end of the game, Osh, apparently, wholeheartedly wants Intel to return to the old days of “domination” in the market (~ 80% share) or, in any case, not to lose control over the market of the x86-compatible processors it has created. , and therefore expresses his criticism.
