Virtualization will be the privilege of Intel dual-core processors
Intel announced the imminent discontinuation of two processors, Pentium 4, models 662 and 672 that support virtualization. Recall that both 90nm Prescott-based chips debuted on the market in November 2021, now it has been announced that the last orders for them will be accepted on September 1, and the last shipment is scheduled by Intel on November 9, 2021.
Recall that single-core Pentium 4s, clocked at 3.6 and 3.8 GHz, respectively, are equipped with a 2 MB L2 cache and operate with an 800 MHz bus. They were the only single-core Intel processors that supported virtualization – 660 and 670 models, all other things being equal, are deprived of it.
Obviously, such a move by the company indicates a desire to make this technology the privilege of dual-core Pentium D processors (we are not considering Core 2 Duo yet), since their prices are falling, and the relevance of single-core processors with support for virtualization will indeed be quite small. By the way, no information on the withdrawal from production of other Pentium 4 models has yet been received.
