TDK Showcases 200GB Blu-ray Disc
Japanese company TDK announced the readiness of a prototype Blu-ray disc with a capacity of 200 GB, which is eight times higher than the standard capacity of such media.
The developer managed to increase the capacity of one layer to 33 GB, there are 6 such layers in the prototype.
The first layer uses the standard Blu-ray silicon-copper alloy, while the rest of the TDK uses bismuth and germanium oxide. When bismuth oxide is irradiated with a laser, when the temperature reaches 690 degrees Kelvin (417 Celsius), oxygen is released, forming a structure that can later be read by the laser as a storage medium.
